Features:

Dungeon Hunter 2 is an excellent Diablo style RPG for select Android devices. Since it is produced by Gameloft it is only available to select devices and through select app stores. Dungeon Hunter 2 is played from an aerial third person perspective and features customizable skill trees, three different playable characters, massive dungeons, varying armor types and qualities, plus online multiplayer.
The first step to playing Dungeon Hunter 2 is creating a character to play with. There are three different types of characters in the game: the warrior, the rogue, and the mage. Each type of character can branch off different ways within their class skill trees to form a different kind of super killer. The warrior class specializes in strength and endurance battles and can upgrade to either a beserker or a crusader. The rogue character orients itself around speed and precision and upgrades to the death walker or the archer. Finally, the mage specializes in magic attacks and can become either a shadowmancer or an illusionist.
I personally played the game as both the mage and the warrior classes and found them both to be quite enjoyable. I found that grinding levels and progressing through dungeons was more difficult with the mage, but boss fights were much more challenging with the warrior due to the high amounts of physical damage he would take. The way each of these classes play mirrors many other RPGs like WOW, Diablo, or Guild Wars; so if you know your play style for one of those games you will likely know it for Dungeon Hunter 2.
The skill trees are also very similar to other RPGs. Each character has various class skills which either give more power to existing abilities or provide new spells for your hero. The mage character has an interesting ability that I unlocked while playing the game called “Doppelganger.” With this ability the mage was able to generate an explosive stone doppelganger in its place and teleport elsewhere. This would allow you to escape death at the hands of multiple enemies and easily damage a large pack of enemies. In a similar fashion various melee based abilities exist for both the rogue and the warrior in order to allow them to increase their damage output and to escape from enemies.
Dungeon Hunter 2 also allows you to modify your player’s attributes. This means that with each level gained your character is given skill points which he can use to upgrade his strength, dexterity, endurance, or energy. Strength boosts your physical damage attacks, energy increases magic damage and mana regen, dexterity increases speed, and endurance increases your characters health and regen.
The items in Dungeon Hunter 2 follow the same basic quality system as other RPGs. Green items are good, purple items are epic, orange items are legendary, and white items are practically useless. One nice feature integrated in Dungeon Hunter 2 is an auto-equip best equipment option. This allows the computer to automatically determine which equipment is best for your character and to equip them for you. This prevents you from having to spend large amounts of time sorting through items and makes the game easier to play.
The dungeons are immense. Each world you will explore throughout the game has many different passages, items, mobs, and secret areas for you to explore. Certain areas will be sealed off in the world until you complete the necessary quests, but for the most part the developers give you a free roam of the world. This allows you to become more immersed in the storyline and to personalize your experience in that realm.
Unfortunately, I was not able to test out the online multiplayer aspect of the game. This is due to the horrible architecture of the Gameloft Live system. First, when you try to play the game online you have to create a Gameloft Live account…. fine. The set up process for this account seems easy and makes the whole online login process seem easier than it ends up being. Essentially a Gameloft Live account is a universal login for all Gameloft games that must be used to access online multiplayer. My frustrations do not come from creating a login, but the actual log on process. While testing this game I was using the Sony Xperia Play so naturally I assumed that the hardware cursor keys could be used at the login screen to either edit existing information or to move to a different text box. In fact with the physical controls slider open it is impossible to select the password input box! I tried the cursor keys, the touchpads, the circle, the triangle, the box, the X, the start keys, the select key, the back trigger pads, and even the touch screen and none of them worked. None of them whatsoever! Finally, I discovered that after sliding the keypad up and behind the screen that somehow the touchscreen cursor was re-enabled and I could type in my password.
At this point I was already extremely frustrated and then I had to type in my username and password using only the proprietary Gameloft keyboard at the login screen. There is no reason for a proprietary keyboard at this log in screen and what is even worse- this keyboard defaults everything to uppercase. My username had a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters which had not been a problem using the standard keyboard on Gameloft’s home screen, but became a huge problem when trying to use their keyboard. I at first assumed that usernames were not case sensitive and that the uppercase characters that showed when I typed were just part of the games motif, but after many many failed attempts I realized there was an issue. Then I tried using the shift key to make capitals, still this didn’t work. Instead the shift key made lower case. I was completely baffled and gave up.
Later I came back to the application and tried to login, but couldn’t remember my username. Guess what? Gameloft has a forgot password option, but no forgot username option; and no it was never sent in an email to me. So I gave up on Gameloft Live with this and I bet I am not the only one who has given up on it because of this insane login process.

Fun Factor:

Multiplayer issues aside, Dungeon Hunter 2 is incredibly fun to play. The gameplay is the closest thing you can get to Diablo 2 on your Android device and with the graphics, customization, and immense worlds this game has to offer it can compete with Diablo 2 and Dungeon Siege for epic third person aerial RPG Supremacy.

Addictive:

Dungeon Hunter 2 is an extremely addictive RPG, but would be much so if the multiplayer process was easier to use. I also think this and other Gameloft titles would be more addictive if they offered online multiplayer over 3G instead of just Wi-Fi and if they could be played on all of your devices with just a single purchase.

Graphics:

The graphics for the levels, the characters, and the cut-scenes are stupendous! One thing I have to give Gameloft is that they spend a lot of time and money producing their games and normally their products take first when it comes to getting the highest production value out of this years current hardware; which Dungeon Hunter is no exception for that rule. If you want a console quality experience on a handheld then look no farther than Gameloft.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Dungeon Hunter makes no use of either vibration or the device’s accelerometer and for this game it wouldn’t have made sense to make use of those features. The soundtrack for Dungeon Hunter 2 is excellent and adds a lot to the game. On the audio level this game leaves nothing to be desired and gives a first class experience right out of the proverbial box.

Should you Download Dungeon Hunter 2? Maybe. Gameloft makes excellent games and always produces incredible and virtually unrivaled worlds with luscious graphics, intricate stories, and high levels of customization. Unfortunately, this game is really pricey and can be only downloaded from Gameloft directly or through Vcast Apps. This means you can only use this game on one device and cannot share it with other phones or tablets. I was also extremely unhappy with the online multiplayer login process. Whatever you do… don’t use capitals in your username! Lol. If you don’t care about the multiplayer aspect, don’t change phones often, and don’t care about spending $5 on an application then you will enjoy Dungeon Hunter 2 and can play it for hours on end.
